By the time dawn was once again threatening to chase away the night, Finn was already standing by the open door to their room, looking through the crack at the corridor beyond.

“No one?” Tobias whispered. Finn turned to see that the Verdan was fully dressed and equipped, his face grim. Behind his smaller form, Rosa was at the shutters, looking through at the murky courtyard outside.

“Nothing here, either. What could be taking them so long?” she hissed.

Finn could only agree. At some point in the middle of the night, Sister Alharrow had returned briefly to tell them that she had found Welan and he had agreed to show them his ‘secret path’ over the ridge. Once again, Finn didn’t want to know how the Lycan had cajoled, threatened, or otherwise coerced this out of him.

But they had said that they would be waiting for us at first light, and there isn’t anyone, Finn thought as he checked the hallway again, looking back to see Rosa shake her head.

“Okay, we move.” Finn shrugged. He’d had enough of waiting.

He opened the door and stepped out, first pausing to make sure that Albax hadn’t sent a crew to ‘encourage’ them out of the Storm Hill Inn. Satisfied, he went to the next door over, the Lycans’ room, to find that it was empty. Wherever they were, they had cleaned out their room.

“What is it?” Rosa breathed behind him, her silver quarterstaff in her hands as she peered suspiciously into the room.

“Was Felix or Alharrow injured up on the ridgeway?” Finn asked. “Because this is blood, and it’s still wet.”

“Then it wouldn’t be from last night,” Tobias murmured from the hallway. As an Earth Initiate, life and healing were part of his magical skills. “It would have dried by now. And if they had an injury that bled for that long, they would be in trouble.”

Damn it! Finn hissed. Where are they?!

He stood up, moving quickly down the corridor to where it opened out into one of the smaller common rooms. They found it quiet . . .but not deserted.

As Finn stepped through the door, there was a nervous shuffle from the other end of the room, and Finn saw the disappearing back of Albax’s son.

He was moving quickly through the archway, and instinctively, Finn knew that there was something wrong. That he had been told to wait for them, or snoop on them.

“Wait!” Finn said, running across the common room as chairs scattered before him, but the boy was faster. He knew the Storm Hill Inn inside and out and was already in the main room, his hands on the door as he threw it open.

“They’re here!” he shouted.

Finn skidded to a halt in the main room. He didn’t bear any weapons, not against a kid.

“What have you done? What’s
